Every Los Alamos winter produces the same two calls: the ones who see the ice early, and the ones who see the ceiling stain first. As part of our complete Los Alamos winter roof services, crews handle water mitigation & dryout across Los Alamos County.
Sun on Cold Snow: The Los Alamos Pattern
Thin air at altitude means intense direct sun even in deep cold. A Los Alamos roof can be melting on its south face at midday in air that never gets near freezing, and all of that water has to go somewhere.

Aspect decides which eaves suffer. A sunny plane sheds water across a roof in Los Alamos to a shaded eave that has not been above freezing for weeks, and that is where the ice builds into a wall.
Ice-barrier practice in Los Alamos County
High-country New Mexico codes typically call for extended ice barrier and, on metal roofing, snow guards above any door, walkway or parking area. Both exist because of what comes off these roofs.
Water Mitigation & Dryout in Los Alamos: How The Work Runs
Ceilings: when it comes down and when it stays
A stained ceiling is not automatically a demolished ceiling. Painted drywall that has been wetted once and can be dried from above through the insulation cavity will often flatten out and need nothing but paint. Wet Insulation in the Attic.
What does come down is drywall that has lost its bond and gone soft, anything sagging under held water, textured or plaster ceilings that have delaminated, and any ceiling where the cavity above cannot be reached another way. The call is made with a meter, and shown to you before anything is opened.
Why wet insulation comes out rather than dries
Saturated cellulose and fiberglass hold water against framing and sheathing for weeks, and in a cold attic there is no air movement to carry it off. It also stops insulating, which warms the deck and feeds the next dam.
So it comes out. On an attic in Los Alamos that is usually the single biggest step toward the structure actually drying.
Clean water does not stay clean
Meltwater off a roof starts as category one - essentially clean. It does not stay that way. Passing through old insulation, wall cavities, dust and whatever has accumulated in a ceiling plane for forty years degrades it, and standing more than a day or two degrades it again.
That classification drives what can be dried in place and what has to be removed, and it is the reason a leak dealt with on day one is a smaller job than the identical leak dealt with on day five.
From dry to finished: the interior repair
Mitigation ends when the readings hit standard. The repair starts right after, with the same company: new insulation, drywall hung and finished, texture matched, trim replaced and painted, and flooring where it did not recover.
Keeping it in-house means one scope, one claim and one set of documentation from the first photograph in Los Alamos to the last coat of paint, rather than a dried-out room sitting open while you look for a contractor.
Dry does not mean dry
A ceiling stain stops spreading long before the cavity behind it is dry. Wet cellulose and fiberglass hold water against the framing for weeks, and in a cold attic the evaporation that would normally handle it simply does not happen. That is how a January leak becomes a spring mold problem.
Mitigation means getting the structure back to a documented dry standard — not back to looking fine. Moisture meter readings on framing, sheathing and drywall are what close the job, not appearance.

Los Alamos County Coverage From Los Alamos
Crews working Los Alamos cover the surrounding Los Alamos County addresses on the same route, so a storm week usually means one truck handling several properties rather than separate trips.
Nearest hub towns with their own water mitigation pages: Espanola, Santa Fe, Taos, Las Vegas, Taos Ski Valley, Angel Fire.
During a cold snap Los Alamos gets worked alongside the neighboring Los Alamos County towns on the same route, with active interior leaks moved to the front of the list.
Most jobs do not stop at one service. Water Mitigation in Los Alamos often runs alongside ice dam removal in Los Alamos, and both get written into one scope rather than billed as separate visits.
Active leak right now? Our 24/7 Los Alamos steam ice dam removal crews are dispatched first during a freeze event. Call (888) 561-9664.
